I was enjoying the Webb Telescope launch data streaming in day-by-day on YouTube. The more I consumed the data I realized the information was hard to understand and I had no idea on the big picture.
The live YouTube stream had cool data streaming in, but it was hard to understand how each data point related to one another.
The layout and use of space made it hard to read some items as they moved across the day and distance scale.
Understanding the big picture was not clear to me. The old design left me wondering about the relative distances and orbits of Hubble, earths moon and the L2 destination.
I took on the redesign of this space (pun intended) after dissecting all the data in detail and doing some research on this event. Over a few days I continued consuming the fresh data and collecting feedback on what other people where reading or understanding from what they saw.
I started noodling around with the information as a design and continued researching with a bit of back and forth on each.
I was able to add more clarity around telling a story by aligning like elements together. Speed, distance and temperature are all related to days since launch.
I am currently collecting feedback on the design. Please send me a note if you're interested.
